Kauri Hawkins
About the work
The work “Welcome to Our Land” references the tribal disputes surrounding ownership of the land now known as Canberra. As an artist, I use the names and stories of the land as a jumping off point to create work. Welcome to Our Land signifies First Nation’s connection to the land while not excluding the complexities of ownership. Road signs traditionally refer to place names and navigation of the land, my work takes those stories of the land and navigation of it to tell indigenous stories of ownership.
