In Service
In Service is an exhibition interested in making visible the structures, systems, and working parts of contemporary life that are often overlooked or taken for granted. Working across sculpture, installation, and industrial design, the artists draw on material, form, and concept to reveal the infrastructures that quietly support, organise, and shape the way we live.
Steel, recycled plastics, industrial polymers, packaging, cable ties, responsive technologies, and hidden structural materials become the exhibition’s visual language. These are materials that typically exist in service of something else—designed to support, protect, optimise, package, organise, or conceal. Very rarely are these materials the soul focus of our aesthetic attention. Here, they are brought to the foreground, inviting closer attention to the objects and systems that quietly underpin our everyday lives.
Installed throughout 1 Constitution Place and A by Adina, the exhibition situates these works within spaces of work, commerce, and civic life. In this context, ergonomic furniture, responsive lighting, industrial manufacturing, corporate hierarchies, packaging materials, and even the microscopic machinery of living cells become different expressions of the same idea: that contemporary life is shaped by countless interconnected systems operating just beyond our attention. In Service asks what happens when those systems become visible, and what they reveal about the ways we work, consume, care for one another, and move through the world.
Service brings together the works of Jennifer Mathws, Sam Tomkins and Minka Gillian and is curated by Grace Blake.
In Service was made possible by the philanthropic support of 1 Constitution Place and festival Accomodation Partner A by Adina.
