About the work

First presented at Sydney Contemporary in 2019, Gregory Hodge’s Suspension Painting marked the artist’s first monumental exploration of immersive suspended painting and sculpture, creating an installation that engulfs the viewer’s senses. Drawing upon the history of illusionistic painting, from trompe-l’oeil to large-scale Italian Baroque frescoes, Hodge absorbs painterly traditions into an ever-expanding abstract visual language. The work incorporates motifs from his earlier paintings, translating them into three-dimensional space through large painted cut-outs on aluminium composite panel. Gestural marks, folded drapery, painted textiles and geological forms cluster together and suspend from the ceiling, appearing to hover weightlessly in space. The interplay between painted illusion and real shadow creates a playful contradiction between flatness and depth, image and object. Paint itself assumes a chameleon-like quality, seemingly transforming into different materials while oscillating between abstraction and figuration, illusion and sculptural relief. Suspension Painting ultimately expands painting beyond the wall into a dynamic spatial encounter.

About the artist

Currently living and working in Paris, Gregory Hodge is an Australian artist that has continued to refine a distinctive visual language exploring the relationship between the image surface and perception. Drawing from personal source material alongside motifs of landscapes, interiors, flowers and architecture, the artist constructs densely layered compositions that hover between recognisable imagery and abstraction. Amongst international residencies at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris (2019-2020 and 2024); The British School at Rome (2015); and Basso Berlin (2011), Hodge also holds a PhD from the Australian National University Canberra School of Art (2016).
